How is localisation different from translation?
Translation is the changing of a text from a source language to a target language which is immeasurably valuable for the purpose of effective communication. Localisation is the process of taking that the message being conveyed within the piece of text and ensuring that it is effectively translated into the vernacular so that culturally relevant phrasings and markers are taken into consideration to tailor the translated piece specifically to the target local market. This process is done by professional translators who are also native speakers of the target language, often a specialist in a given field with a working knowledge of the topic and allowed a wider region to adapt the given text, thus guaranteeing that the finished translation conveys the right information in a manner suited to the language and the culture of the country concerned.
Localisation can also be a process of ensuring that the information you give your customers is correct for the country that it is being targeted to, ensuring things like the correct country address is shown as well as avoiding a cultural errors by replacing images or icons and avoiding using phrases that don’t translate well or mean the same in one culture or another. From an English speakers perspective one can also look at localisation from the point of view of being similar to changing the style of language to suit a US or GB market, adapting the style of writing, avoiding colloquialisms and making sure the correct logos and telephone numbers are used in the correct places.
